Printmaking Artists Statement

My artwork features a lantern with many different values. In the center and the top it is relatively light while on the sides and the bottom it has a darker value. The lantern itself has a abstract shape and the background has many faint oil spots to add tone to the piece.

I called the piece The Lantern for obvious reasons. For this project we did intaglio printmaking. For this we had to carve away at a specific material to add different values for after the print is finished. The hardest part about creating the piece was the strain it put on my arm when I had to press down hard for a darker value. This often led to small mistakes in the process.

The entire process of carving then printing was fun and different than what I usually do. It was interesting to see what would come out after the piece was done printing and to see which parts were darker than the rest. In the end I liked the black oil over the colored oil because it made the piece seem ominous and mysterious and it was more fitting for what the subject was.
